Tomatoes are one of the favorite fruits of millions of people around
the world. They are delicious and a perfect choice for a side dish, and
contain numerous essential nutrients important for our health such as
vitamin C and lycopene.
Both compounds have immune boosting properties
and can prevent various diseases and conditions.
The fruit is most known for its rich lycopene content. This powerful
and rare antioxidant is responsible for the vibrant red color of
tomatoes and can be found in carrots and guava as well. Lycopene can
fight free radicals in the body and reduce the risk of cancer, while
protecting your skin and delaying the aging process.
According to several studies, lycopene is very effective against
prostate cancer. Experts say that it reduces the risk against this type
of cancer by 50%, and some claim that it can prevent esophageal cancer
as well. 100 gr. of tomatoes contain 3.3-7.1 mg. of lycopene – this
amount jumps up to 150 mg. per liter for tomato juice.
Experts say that
our bodies require 30 mg. of lycopene to function properly, and the body
can synthesize it best through tomatoes. However, the amount of
lycopene varies in different types of tomatoes – tomatoes from the
market have less than organic tomatoes, which is why you should avoid
them. For best results, we recommend growing your own tomatoes at home!
It’s not hard – it’s actually a simple process that will provide you
with a steady supply of tomatoes.
Here’s what you need to do:
You’ll need the following ingredients:
1 small tomato plant
2 l. plastic bottles
Soil
Water
Coffee filter
8 cm. skewer or toothpick
Wire (for the bottle)
Insulating tape
Screwdriver
Scissors
Instructions
- Wash the plastic bottle well.
- The first thing you need to do is cut the bottom part of the bottle.
- Next, fit the bottom part on the top and secure it.
- Make two symmetrical holes on the sides of the bottom part – make sure the toothpick or skewer can go through them.
- Make about ten holes on the bottom with the screwdriver to create a dispenser.
- Now, take the tomato plant.
- Take the coffee filter as well.
- Make a hole in the coffee filter.
- Toil the plant through the coffee filter.
- Wrap the filter around the plant and cover the soil of the rhizome.
- Now, toil the plant through the opening of the bottle carefully, and use the toothpick or skewer to raise the plant.
- Now, turn the bottle upside down like in the picture below and fill it with soil to the top. However, leave a bit of room for the water dispenser.
- Now, put the skewer through the holes you previously made.
- Put a wire on them in order to hang the plant.
- Pour water in the dispenser.
- Hang the tomato plant and enjoy watching it grow!
